In today's environment, many people are going to university, and many more are now being hired more on the basis of achievements and prior experience, whether paid or unpaid. This may indicate to some that the worth of university has lessened, but this is not the case - if anything, it has now become the standard by which someone entering into any post-academic field will be judged.
If you are looking into a particular profession, perhaps medicine, science or law, chances are you're going to be looking at what universities will best serve you. Of course, some people will take up jobs early and work their way into higher positions, but the problem is that without a degree or formal, high-level qualifications of any kind, not only can you not practise your profession at a high level, but it also becomes next to impossible to transfer to another company simply because they have no guarantees of how good you may be in your desired role.
Preparing for the degree and estimating the benefit of the degree marked up against the cost of studying (especially if they are studying abroad) is also very important. Whether you are speaking to several loan companies or you are on credit card comparison websites, you are likely to find that a means of supporting yourself will mean an easier degree, better grades due to lessened financial pressure on you as a student, and therefore more opportunities when you leave with a better degree. The 4.0 and the 2:1 or 1st are ideal for careers ranging industry-wide in every sector. Experience is qualification in itself, but a degree is a stamp of approval from those who know best.
Many students are also now choosing to study abroad. This is a bold move - the choice to live in another country for a significant amount of time in order to receive the highest quality of education is definitely not something for the faint-hearted, but the benefits can be more than worth the small sacrifices of cultural adjustment. Many students travel to France, the United States and the United Kingdom to study a variety of topics, and Europe has become one of the most popular destinations for those wanting to study away from home for a year. Degrees are more and more valuable as time goes on, and whether you're heading to parts unknown or learning on your home turf, there's never a better time to get qualified for your dream career.
